Food Safety Advisory – Romaine Lettuce

As of November 27, 2018

The FDA/CDC has announced that Romaine from the California desert region of Imperial Valley, Yuma Arizona, Florida, and Mexico has been confirmed for consumption by consumers.

The FDA and suppliers of Romaine and packaged Romaine products have agreed to establish measures to ensure the public’s safety.  Growers, processors, distributors and retailers will now:

  • clearly and prominently label all individually packaged romaine products to identify growing region and harvest date for romaine; and
  • clearly and prominently label at the point of sale the growing region when it is not possible for romaine lettuce suppliers to label the package (e.g. individual unwrapped whole heads of romaine lettuce available in retail stores).
